How To Get More Out Of Your Meditation

Yoga and meditation are the lucrative tools that make up the foundation of everything we do. Running several businesses (including our beloved Peak Physique Hot Yoga studios!), running our yoga teacher training courses and being keen, ambitious business entrepreneurs, we need to have the right mindset at all times. There is no time for a negative attitude or feelings of doubt — we need to have our heads in the game, no matter what our busy schedule throws at us.

While this may all sound very intense and corporate, we believe that yoga and meditation are at the heart of our passion and success, and we highly credit these lucrative tools for what we have achieved in our careers. In our teacher training programs, meditation is one of the first subjects we cover, because we know the value of it and believe that a good yoga instructor values this, too. In fact, Part 1 of our current teacher training program is in full swing, and our Adelaide and Brisbane trainees have been studying the concepts of meditation in yoga, and putting them into practice.

Meditation allows us to clear our minds of clutter and noise, and to refocus on goals, intentions and what is important to us. No matter what your lifestyle or what your dreams are, we believe that meditation can help you to live life to the fullest. We wanted to share a few of our tips for getting the most out of your intention and meditation.

What is meditation?

Let’s demystify meditation for a second here. Meditation means different things to different people. At its core, meditation is focusing on the mind and clearing it of thoughts (especially negative ones). On a personal level, it is about forming a relationship with your inner-self and figuring out how to work with the tendencies of your own thoughts.

Setting an intention

At PPHY, every yoga class starts with setting an intention. This is deeply personal and can be harder than it sounds. Intentions can be goals, mantras or simply positive thoughts. While it may seem strange at first, we believe that setting an intention before class is key to getting the most out of your practice and your life.

Before practice, give yourself time to ‘arrive’ in the present moment. This may mean taking a minute to yourself in the car before heading into the studio. It may be a choice to practice Savasana before class, instead of having a quiet chat to a friend. It may be working with different teas or essential oils to set the mood and create a kind of ‘method’ for arriving at your practice. Whatever works for you, make it a routine so that your mind and body knows when it is time to practice. This is also important at the end of your session. Instead of jumping up out of Savasana and leaving your practice without a second thought, give yourself time to stretch, reflect and be grateful.

Focus on the breath

You will hear your teacher repeat these words throughout your practice, and for good reason. If you find your mind is wandering away from you and your mat, bring your focus back to the breath. It is an easy way to regain your presence.

“Meditation and mind control has been a big part of achieving our goals as a company and in our personal lives. You get so much more done (and do it better!) when your mind is clear, calm and focused.”

Commit to your meditation

No matter how you meditate, make sure you commit to it. Meditation is a repetitive process, and results are seen with time. Keep at it and remember why you started.
